All courses will be held in TS Hornet Sea Cadet Unit, Gosport, except Sea Survival and ISAF courses which take place at KTY Yachts, Universal Marina.

RYA Radar - Sun 7 Feb
Basic understanding of radar and set controls. Plotting and collision avoidance. Navigation techniques. £60 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £70 others. Instructor Yvonne Taylor. Recommended for first and second mates, required for skippers. Provisionally full.


RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course - Sat 6 Feb
Use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures. £25 exam fee + £50 course fee for OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £60 others. Instructor Mark "Wolf" Todd. The updated radio licence. Recommended for third mates, required for second mates and above. 1 place left.


RYA Basic Sea Survival (one day) Sat 6 March OR Sat 17 April
Preparation for survival, life jackets, medical issues, search and rescue techniques. It includes a practical session in a swimming pool to experience entering an inflated liferaft whilst fully kitted out. £75 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £85 others. Instructor Yvonne Taylor. Recommended for all OYT South sea staff.


RYA / ISAF Offshore Safety Course (two days) 6-7 March OR 17-18 April
Includes the one-day RYA Sea Survival course, followed by a day covering heavy weather seamanship, weather forecasting, fire fighting and man overboard recovery, and including the RYA one-day first aid course. £150 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £170 others, plus £10 to include first aid upgrade if required. Instructor Yvonne Taylor. Recommended for all OYT South sea staff.


Basic Food Hygiene - Sat 6 Feb
Know your responsibilities under the food safety law; understand what bacteria are and how they poison food; recognise the symptoms caused by the main food poisoning bacteria; know how to prevent cross contamination; follow good working practices when storing food, cooking and serving food, and cleaning. £45 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £55 others. Instructor Madge Middleton. Required for all OYT South sea staff. Provisionally full.


RYA Diesel Engine - Sun 7 Feb
Basic maintenance and engine care. Awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require workshop support. £70 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, £80 others. Instructor Jason Morgan. Recommended for bosuns plus second mates and above. Course provisionally full but we are keeping a reserve list in case anyone drops out.


RYA One-day First Aid - Sun 7 Feb
First aid and resuscitation techniques for yachtsmen, including a knowledge of the treatment for hypothermia. Price £45 to OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets, + £10 for first aid handbook, £55 + £10 others. Instructor Tony Salmon. Recommended for ALL sea staff, required for second mates and above, compulsory updates every 3 years - check when your certificate goes out of date.Provisionally full.


Lifejacket packing - Sat 6 Feb
It is now compulsory to have trained people to repack our lifejackets after their regular inflation tests or if a lifejacket goes off by mistake. It is therefore absolutely essential for safety reasons that we get a good number of sea staff through this course. It only takes a couple of hours. Price £25. Possibly 1 place left.

All these courses are open to anyone, although if courses are over-subscribed, priority is given to active OYT South members and those planning to join our sea staff.
