First aid and diesel courses & Mark's speech

Shorebased training weekend February 2013

OYT South's 2013 shorebased training weekend will take place on Saturday 16th February and Sunday 17th February 2013.

The following courses will run:

RYA One-day First Aid - Sat 16 Feb.
RYA Basic Sea Survival - Sat 16 Feb.
Chart corrections - Sat 16 Feb.
RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (GMDSS) - Sun 17 Feb.
RYA Radar - Sun 17 Feb.

Youthwork - Sun 17 Feb.
TBC: RYA Diesel engines - Sat 16 Feb - please note that we need one or two more bookings to make this course cost-effective. We'll only confirm the course if we get them. If we get enough additional interest, it might still be possible to run a second course on the Sunday.

There are still spaces on all these course except
RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (GMDSS) which is provisionally fully-booked; but since not everyone has yet confirmed or paid, it could be well worth putting your name on the reserve list if this is the course you really want. Email to put your name down for any course - if there is definitely space for you we will reserve a place and send you an email asking you to confirm and pay.

All courses will be held in TS Hornet Sea Cadet Unit, Gosport, except Sea Survival which takes place at KTY Yachts, Universal Marina.

Most courses will run from 9am to 5pm; Sea Survival takes a bit longer so will start at 0845.

There will be a supper and social event on Saturday evening after the courses - all welcome, whether or not you are taking part in the training. Just use the booking form and click "dinner".

For all courses, email to reserve a place. Once you have had email confirmation that a place is available, please use the form here to confirm your booking and make your payment. Please don't pay for a place until we have confirmed that there is space for you!

Chart corrections - Sat 16 Feb
A free course aimed at people who are likely to be involved in keeping John Laing's charts up to date during the season. If you sail with us fairly regularly, or often come to maintenance days, and have some knowledge of or interest in navigation, this could be the course for you. Don't foget that chart corrections MUST be done during our voyages and the person doing them is often inside in the warm and dry while everyone else is wet and cold on deck....

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course (GMDSS) - Sun 17 Feb
Use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures. £30 exam fee (cheque payable to RYA on the day) + £55 course fee for OYT South members / Gosport Sea Cadets. Instructor Mark Todd. The updated radio licence. Recommended for third mates, required for second mates and above.

- Sun 17 Feb
Working with more challenging young people. This course will be run by Lucinda Neall who is a qualified OYT South watchleader with extensive experience in working with young people whose backgrounds and behaviour might make them particularly complicated to work with: for example, in 2012, she brought us a crew of young people many of whom had been involved in the London riots - some had served custodial sentences as a result. Lucinda achieves exceptional results with these young people and her course should be really interesting, both for those of you interested in working with more challenging groups but also for those of you who generally sail on more mainstream voyages but might like more ideas on how to deal with an occasional unco-operative member of your watch! Price £35. Recommended for all staff and volunteers.

Email to reserve a place. Once you have had email confirmation that a place is available, please use the form here to confirm your booking and make your payment.

The booking form also allows you to book lunch on either day; dinner on Saturday night; overnight accommodation in the Sea Cadet Unit (mattresses on the floor); and breakfast on the Sunday morning.

All these courses are open to anyone, although if courses are over-subscribed, priority is given to active OYT South members and those planning to join our sea staff.
