RYA One-day First Aid - Sun 23 Feb - provisionally FULL but we can take names for a reserve list if needed.

These are all formal RYA courses except for the chart corrections workshop and the Prince's Trust session. Details of all courses are given below.

All courses will be based around TS Hornet Sea Cadet Unit, Gosport. Please note that owing to new and very strict regulations governing parking in Royal Clarence, around the Sea Cadet Unit, we MUST have (in advance) the registration numbers of all vehicles which will be using the car park on either day. If you are coming by car, PLEASE email your registration number to webmaster1@oytsouth.org by Wednesday 12th February at the latest (but preferably do it straight away, before you forget)! If we don’t have your details in time then the maximum time you will be able to leave your car in Royal Clarence is limited to 3 hours.

Most courses will run from 9am to 5pm (except the GMDSS assessment), so you can only do one course per day. Where a course is running on both days, it’s a repeat to allow us to include more people, so you only need to sign up for one day per course!

There will be a supper and social event on Saturday evening after the courses - all welcome, whether or not you are taking part in the training. Just use the booking form and click "dinner". You can also book lunches and cheap basic accommodation.

For all courses, email to reserve a place, if you haven't already had an offer of specific places on particular days (those who booked early should have had this confirmation already). Once you have had email confirmation that a place is available, please use the form here to confirm your booking and make your payment. But please do pay immediately on booking unless you have been offered a free course for any reason!

RYA One-day First Aid - Sat 22 Feb and possible extra course on Sun 23 Feb if there is sufficient demand.
First aid and resuscitation techniques for yachtsmen, including a knowledge of the treatment for hypothermia. Price £70 to OYT South members (includes cost of first aid handbook). Instructor Tony Salmon. Recommended for ALL sea staff, required for second mates and above, compulsory updates every 3 years - check when your certificate goes out of date.

RYA Diesel Engine
- Sat 22 Feb / Sun 23 Feb (the full course on each day).
Basic maintenance and engine care. Awareness of the main systems of a marine diesel engine. Able to take simple measures to prevent mechanical breakdown at sea and rectify defects which do not require workshop support. Price £70. Instructor Jason Morgan. Recommended for bosuns plus second mates and above.

Chart corrections - Sun 23 Feb
A free workshop aimed at people who are likely to be involved in keeping John Laing's charts up to date during the season. If you sail with us fairly regularly, or often come to maintenance days, and have some knowledge of or interest in navigation, this could be the course for you. Don't forget that chart corrections MUST be done during our voyages and the person doing them is often inside in the warm and dry while everyone else is wet and cold on deck....Emma Burrows and Andy Viney will be on hand to show you how to keep our charts up to date and the system for recording corrections, and we'll use the day to make sure that as many charts as possible are ready for the season!.

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course (GMDSS) - Sun 17 Feb
Use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures.

Anyone interested in the GMDSS radio certificate should know that there will be a complete change for this course from January 2014. It now involves a course which can be done either online OR in a classroom, followed by a written and practical assessment (which cannot happen on the same day). OYT South will be offering the RYA online course and will arrange for the assessment to take place at the training weekend. The online course is in the final stages of development and will be launched in early January. If you book to do this then we will give you access to the online course as soon as possible, and allocate time at the training weekend for your assessment. We will be charging £40 for the online course (which includes the course pack) and then there is a further examination fee of £60. The online course should take in the region of 6 -10 hours to complete. We’ve looked at a beta version of it and it is excellent  (it’s much more interesting than listening to Mark drone on for 10 hours or more, he says - frankly, in our view it’s worth paying the money just not to see him). [He told me to write this - Ed]. The online course MUST be completed prior to the assessment. The assessment on the day should take the morning or afternoon. It will involve a session using VHF sets and there will be time that day to familiarise yourself with them. Please note this price is only available for OYT South members and anyone else interested in doing the course should contact us separately. You must also be over the age of 16 to do the assessment.

Assessor Mark Todd. Recommended for third mates, required for second mates and above.

RYA Radar - Sat 22 Feb
Basic understanding of radar and set controls. Plotting and collision avoidance. Navigation techniques. £75 to OYT South members. Instructor Yvonne Taylor. Recommended for first and second mates, required for skippers.

Prince's Trust
- Sat 22 Feb / Sun 23 Feb (the full course on each day)
An  overview of The Prince’s Trust Sail Training programme, covering one-to-one support and techniques, challenging behaviour and choice theory. Recommended for anyone wanting to sail on a Prince's Trust voyage next year but also interesting to others who might sail with more challenging young people. Instructor Mike Strang. Price £10.

Email to reserve a place. Once you have had email confirmation that a place is available, please use the form here to confirm your booking and make your payment.

The booking form also allows you to book lunch on either day; dinner on Saturday night; overnight accommodation in the Sea Cadet Unit (mattresses on the floor); and breakfast on the Sunday morning.

All these courses are open to anyone, although if courses are over-subscribed, priority is given to active OYT South members and those planning to join our sea staff.

“Learned a lot about sailing, but also about myself and the importance of teamwork.” Clemente, 24
