The cost of running OYT South is currently around £250,000 pa.
Berth sales to individuals and youth groups, plus membership and mates fees, deliver approximately half our funds.
This means that any young person sailing in John Laing, even if they get no specific bursary funding, will only pay 50% of the true cost of their place. OYT South has to raise the balance through fundraising - whether from individuals, grant-giving bodies, corporate sponsors or events.
This helps to pay for the essential costs of running the charity, of which the largest items are staff costs for a team of four people (two working on board our vessel and two ashore), and vessel maintenance and equipment.
A third key area is the need to offer bursary funding to young people who would have a great deal to gain from the sail training experience, but who cannot afford even our subsidised voyage fees.
Finally, we are building a fund for the eventual replacement of our vessel: here for more information on a new boat for a new generation.
